About

I’m a writer of fiction, essays, poetry, nature writing, journalism and experimental prose, living and working on Merlukerdee country in the Huon valley of Lutruwita/Tasmania. Over the last decade, I’ve been one of Australia’s most widely published writers of short stories. My debut fiction collection, What Fear Was, is available in print or as an ebook, and my debut poetry book, Lithosphere, was recently commended in the Anne Elder Award.

I’m a Walkley Award-winning essayist, and a past fiction editor at Island. I also curated Island’s Australian Nature Writing project, and was founding editor of the magazine’s online journal. I’ve curated two anthologies of Tasmanian fiction, and was assistant editor of The Abels V.1, a mountain climbing guide. Together with Jane Rawson, I edited Breathing Space, a collection of essays, stories and poems reflecting on Tasmanian relationships with nature.

I’ve written essays and journalism for The Age/Sydney Morning Herald, Guardian Australia, The ABC, Open Book, Overland, Meanjin, Griffith Review and Island.

My literary writing has also appeared in many of these places, as well as The Kenyon Review (USA), Lithub (USA), 3:AM Magazine (France), filling Station (Canada) The Cimarron Review (USA), Poetry Ireland Review, Dark Mountain (UK), New Australian Fiction, The Best Australian Science Writing, On this Ground: The Best Australian Nature Writing, The Saturday Paper, The Lifted Brow, Southerly, Australian Book Review, The Canary Press, The Canberra Times, The Big Issue, Westerly, Kill Your Darlings, The Review of Australian Fiction, Antipodes (USA), Cordite Poetry Review, Best Summer Stories (Black Inc.) and Mascara Literary Review.

My fiction and poetry have been produced for Radio National.

I’ve worked across a huge range of activities in the literary sector, and am always open for commissions and enquiries.
